INGROWN NAIL

MERRITT ISLAND FOOT & ANKLE SPECIALIZES IN A QUICK, VIRTUALLY PAIN FREE CORRECTION OF INGROWN NAILS.

At our Podiatry Practice many of my patients fear coming in for treatment of an infected ingrown toenail. They come in with excruciating pain and we get to send them home feeling a whole lot better. An ingrown toenail occurs when a corner of the nail grows into the flesh of the toe, causing redness and swelling, followed by pain and often infection. Ingrown toenails can occur due to improper trimming of the toenail, trauma or genetic factors.

Treatment for ingrown toenails is performed by gently numbing the toe, and then removing the offending corner of the nail. If you have chronic ingrown toenails, we can remove the root in the office to permanently prevent re-growth of the ingrown portion of the nail.

If you have an ingrown toenail, don't be afraid to schedule an appointment. Your treatment will be gentle and virtually painless, and we'll get you back to your normal activities right away.

TOENAIL FUNGUS

Do you have thick, yellow, discolored toenails? Are you embarrassed to wear your open-toed shoes in public?

YOU MAY HAVE NAIL FUNGUS, A CONDITION ALSO KNOWN AS ONYCHOMYCOSIS

Fungal toenails are caused by an organism that grows in and under the nail. The fungus likes to grow in warm, moist places like your shoes. Many patients pick up fungal toenail infections in the gym locker room, from a nail salon, wet shoes or from trauma. Fungus can stay in the nails for many years and can be passed from one person to another. Treatment for fungal toenails includes topical and oral medications, which used together are very effective.

FOOT WART | PLANTAR WART

OUR PODIATRISTS ARE EXPERTS IN TREATING FOOT WARTS

Merritt Island Foot & Ankle offers many wart removal therapy options. Foot Warts (Plantar Warts) are a common foot condition that we treat in our practice. If you have one or more growths on the bottom of your foot that may or may not be painful, chances are it's a plantar wart.

Plantar Warts are caused by a virus. You may notice little black dots in the wart. People sometimes think these dots are splinters. They are actually the blood vessels that nourish the wart. You can get viral warts anywhere you walk barefoot, such as the local pool, karate studio, dance studio, locker room or even from a pedicure salon.

There are several treatments for plantar warts, the type of treatment received depends upon the patient's needs. Plantar warts can spread easily. If you think you have one or more plantar warts, please book an appointment to have them removed before they multiply

CORNS & CALLUSES

WHAT ARE FOOT CALLUSES?

A callus is an area of hard, thickened skin that can occur across the ball of the foot, on the heel, or on the outer side of the big toe. While many consider them a skin problem, they actually are systemic of a problem with the bone. Calluses have painful nerves and bursal sacs (fluid-filled balloons that act as shock absorbers) beneath them, causing symptoms ranging from sharp, shooting pain to dull, aching soreness.

If you need assistance removing foot calluses, contact our podiatry office and book an appointment with Merritt Island Foot & Ankle. Calluses can be trimmed and comfortable padding can be applied to these painful areas. In addition to medication to relieve inflammation, cortisone may be injected into the underlying bursal sac to rapidly reduce pain and swelling.

A plantar callus forms when one metatarsal bone is longer or lower than the others, and it hits the ground first, and with more force than it is equipped to handle, at every step. As a result, the skin under this bone thickens like a rock in your shoe. Plantar calluses that are recurring are sometimes removed surgically in a procedure called an osteotomy, which relieves pressure on the bone.

WHAT ARE FOOT CORNS?

Foot Corns are calluses that form on the toes because the bones push up against the shoe and put pressure on the skin. The surface layer of the skin thickens and builds up, irritating the tissues underneath. Hard corns are usually located on the top of the toe or on the side of the small toe. Soft corns resemble open sores and develop between the toes as they rub against each other. Improperly fitting shoes are a leading cause of corns. Toe deformities, such as hammertoe or claw toe, also can lead to corns. Special over-the-counter non-medicated donut-shaped foam pads also can help provide some pain relief.
